Calling All Burnt Out Women: An Invitation to Decrease Your Stress

Calling all hyper-independent, high achieving, task oriented women struggling with feeling burnt out! You’ve heard of self regulation. You’ve practiced mindfulness, deep breathing, recited the mantras, and maybe even held some ice. But sometimes your nervous system needs a belly laugh elicited from your best friend since 3rd grade. Sometimes, you need co-regulation.

Co-regulation offers a deeply restorative, relational approach to overcoming chronic stress, anxiety, and trauma. Co-regulation is the emotional and biological process by which one person’s nervous system calms another’s.

Co-Regulation vs. Self Regulation

Self regulation is a tool utilized for mental health and well being. It involves the ability of one person to regulate her own nervous system. It’s a very helpful mental health tool, but sometimes healing can come from the outside. Co-regulation happens when another person’s steady tone of voice, calm eye contact, grounded physical presence, or empathetic listening helps stabilize your own physical and emotional state. It can take the shape of an interactive bridge that moves the body out of fight, flight, or freeze and back into a state of balance. Both self regulation and co-regulation are key pieces to women’s mental health practices.

The Stress Load of Women

Women disproportionately experience chronic stress and mental health challenges which are often driven by a complex mix of hormonal shifts and societal pressures. From the emotional labor of managing households and careers to the neurological impact of trauma, many women spend significant amounts of time in a state of nervous system overdrive. Feeling ‘on edge’, overwhelmed, burnt out, and overstimulated can be indicators that you might benefit from co-regulation.

Historically and culturally, women are often expected to be the primary "co-regulators" for their children, partners, and aging relatives. This dynamic can leave them acting as the emotional shock absorber for their families without receiving reciprocal support, leading to nervous system burnout.

Co-Regulation Protects Mental Health

When women have access to safe, reciprocal co-regulation, their mental health benefits in several ways:

  • Lowers Cortisol and Releases Oxytocin: Safe, attuned connections reduce stress hormones and boost oxytocin, the bonding and calming hormone that acts as a natural buffer against anxiety and cardiovascular strain.

  • Provides a Felt Sense of Safety: The nervous system requires sensory proof of safety, not just logical reassurance. Sitting with a calm, non-judgmental presence allows the body to physically settle in a way that thinking alone cannot achieve.

  • Rebuilds From Trauma: For women who have experienced trauma, co-regulation helps rewrite the internal messaging that the world is inherently dangerous. It offers a corrective emotional experience that builds the foundation for long-term internal stability.

From Isolation to Connection

Recognizing the necessity of co-regulation means shifting the cultural narrative that strength equates to surviving hard times completely alone. It involves actively seeking out relationships and environments where emotional sharing is safe. Whether it is leaning on a trusted friend during a hard moment, engaging in mental health therapy, or joining supportive women’s groups, relying on others allows women to complete the stress cycle and maintain emotional equilibrium.
